This is an often occurring bug in KDE. Many people complain about missing sound icon from panel in their newly installed Kubuntu/KDE boxes. Here is an easy solution.
Steps:
Open your terminal and type below command:
sudo apt-get install kmix
Then log out and log in, you will find your icon in the panel. Easy tweak right? Have fun!
